A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.
A particular user, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
But these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.
A handful of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
