British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Programme Ruled a 'Serious' Violation of Media Standards, Says Broadcasting Watchdog

The BBC committed a "serious breach" of media regulations by not revealing that the presenter of a programme about the Gaza situation was the child of a Hamas official, as determined by British broadcasting authority Ofcom.

An investigation by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has found that the film was "substantially inaccurate".

The chief executive of the broadcaster had previously apologised, stating there had been "a serious error in relation to factual correctness".

The authority has directed the BBC to air a peak-time announcement about its findings.

"Since this amounts to a significant violation of our code, we are directing the broadcaster to broadcast a announcement of our findings against it on BBC Two at 21:00, with a schedule to be confirmed," the regulator stated.

'Risk to Erode Credibility'

The regulator's announcement said: "Our investigation concluded that the programme's failure to disclose that the narrator's male guardian served in a position in the Hamas-administered administration was substantially inaccurate.

"Consequently that the public did not have vital facts which may have been extremely pertinent to their judgment of the voice and the details he shared.

"Trust is at the center of the connection between a media organization and its public, particularly for a state-funded media outlet such as the BBC.

"This error had the possibility to undermine the significantly high levels of confidence that audiences would have placed in a BBC factual programme about the Israel-Gaza war."

The programme was pulled from the online platform in February after the boy's family links came to light, and in July an broadcaster's internal assessment determined it violated the broadcaster's editorial guidelines on truthfulness.

A representative for the broadcaster stated: "The authority's determination is in line with the results of the internal assessment, that there was a significant failing in the documentary in relation to the corporation's content standards on factual correctness, which aligns with regulation 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.

"We expressed regret for this and we comply with the regulator's ruling in complete. We will comply with the sanction as soon as the date and wording are finalised."
