The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
